Romantic adventure; set in South East Queensland in 1956.
On his birthday, the 30th September 1956.
Billy's love for art, lands him in trouble, when his painting wins a widely known local competition.
To his dismay, his father's girlfriend Neana (in a mix-up), is thought to be the winning artist.
Billy steals back his painting and runs away.
Billy is found that evening by Jane, his school friend, who much to Billy's liking states her love for him with a first kiss.
Together they decide to take on a dangerous journey to the caves.
There is also romance for his Billy's father Paul, who is tangled up in decisions of whether to forget Neana after the mix up, or declare his love for her.
At a hearing presided over by the flamboyant Lord Mayor Matthew Cochran and his capable but comical Captain Smith, Neana opens up about her love for Paul.Free to go, Neana unexpectedly also runs away.
Paul must journey to find a love nearly lost by taking a leap of faith.
With the return of Billy and Jane, a happier ending is finally found by all.
But what is the secret they return with? The book cover drawing was sketched by Michael Vanderburg, after reading The Colors of Queensland, in 2006.I first wrote this book in 1992.
It has moved locations and the character's names have changed, but besides some revision the story is the same.
The book is an all ages book, but is definitely written for children.
