This Rural Health Primer was created by the Office of Social and Economic Data Analysis and M.U.'s Rural Health Initiatives Committee to gain and enlightened perspective on demographic trends in rural Missouri.
Rural health problems and their solutions, cannot be considered in a vacuum, but must be considered in an overall content of a sociodemographic background.
The fact that northern Missouri is rapidly losing population, for example, has special implications for designing strategies for overcoming health professions shortage areas.
Some areas of the state, particularly the south central and southeastern areas, demonstrate the well-recognized relationship among poverty, lack of access to health care services, and illness.
We encourage the reader of this primer to use the information as a backdrop to anecdotes, experiences, and other source of data.
The information is not intended to "standalone", or to point out obvious solutions to complex problems.
Rather, we hope the primer will serve as a starting point of basic information from which practitioners, hospitals and clinics, policymakers, educators, and others can better work to solve our state's rural health problems.
